Two years ago, while I was working to collect the videographies of both Lukas Ridgeston and Johan Paulik, an idea for a project emerged while I was watching Lukas In Love, both parts in their entirety; it was the perfect film to cuddle up with on a very cool rainy day: I thought I had to do a blog to celebrate the beautiful work of Bel Ami. I found in Lukas In Love perhaps one of the most beautiful films of erotica I’ve ever seen, barring none and even to this day, it is a lush and gorgeous film and still remains one of the best films Bel Ami has produced to date, and naturally my personal favorite. The beach and scenery of their South African hideaway are breathtaking and the boys were beyond beautiful. It was this film that I would be ‘introduced’ to more of those lovely boys who would steal my heart just as quickly as my delicious Lukas and Johan. Of course the blog was an ambitious project in and of itself and even now, fills me with joy when I work on her. The project I had in mind was even more ambitious and as I write this I still toss the idea around in my head: to compile all the edits from the scenes from the film I’ve done, and place them together within the inherent storyline’s context from beginning to end. It was with that idea in mind I began to start working on them. Over the course of about two years, I think this idea may come to fruition. Risky? Perhaps. But all in the name of creative expression. It would mean that I would have to choose music that would be fitting for each moment of the film and it was easier to do that for some scenes than for others as it happened.
Many musical ideas for this scene between Lukas and Tommy that closes the first part of the film but I just wasn’t sure my original choice, Trust by The Cure, would quite work for this. Hopefully, many of you know the story of the film already. The background of which is it was to be the final film that would feature Lukas and at the time of the film’s shooting Lukas was already being transitioned into his new roles as cameraman and editor. So the premise was in keeping with what was going on with him professionally: saying goodbye to his filming portion of his career and greeting his new adventure as a filmmaker. The story of the film goes: the guys are getting ready for their trip to Cape Town, South Africa but before leaving Lukas wants to say goodbye to Tim. With a bunch of roses in hand he goes back to the apartment to find Tim fucking Danny Saradon. Oops! Heartbroken, Lukas goes on the trip and on the flight he remembers the last time he and Tim were together. He will spend the time working but at the same time attempt to find some ‘distraction’ from his emotional pain but also he hopes to find a new love.
I don’t listen to Coldplay much any more but I felt that their song Fix You was perfect to underscore Lukas’s feelings at this juncture in the film. Tommy comes to him at the right time within the right moment. They find a common ground: Tim cheated on the both of them. Tommy suggests they should try to do without him. Perhaps in the back of his mind Tommy may not be ‘what Lukas wants or needs’ but a light guided them together, ignited the passion within them, and it will be within passion’s fiery light that they will mend their wounded hearts’ if only for a little while. If I was going to string all the edits I did for the first part of the film, this would be I thought, a beautiful way to ‘climax’ part one my mini film.
