Today begins something a bit different and a whole lot special- the beginning of BelAmi’s new online series, Night Scenes. Back in the earlier days when I first started to watch Bel Ami’s earlier films I ran across a sweet, albeit short scene from More Lukas Stories featuring Lukas Ridgeston and Ivo Svobada. What made the scene so charming and sweetly erotic was not that Lukas awakens a sleeping Ivo to have sex with him, but the soft, warm bluish lighting in the room gave the feeling the action was occurring in the middle of the night. There is something romantic as well as exciting to be awakened by your lover in the quiet dark of the night, as you commence your lovemaking, the sounds and breathy words of your passionate ardor that you exchange to one another are the only ones you hear, engaging in a sweet secret, with the Love Gods and Goddesses as its keepers, that only the two of you can share.
So, as I watched this new scene, was taken back to that moment- to lovers, Lukas and Ivo, and a new feeling emerged as I watched this new pair of lovers, Johnny and Tom. It’s very true: filming at night lends a bit of romance to a scene that is so much harder to capture during a daytime tryst. You can still have it, surely, but something gets lost in the translation. There is something more erotic as well as breathtakingly romantic in sharing your love with someone in the quiet dark away from everyone and everything. You can lose yourself completely in your lover’s embrace, undisturbed- enshrouded in the peace of the darkness. Again, what was old has become new again, done with the fresh eyes that comes with a new directorial vision.
What also makes this one special too, is a little of the backstory between two of our newest favorites, Tom Pollock and Johnny Bloom who are featured in the series opening scene. Tom and Johnny also work together in the same room in Bel Ami’s Prague office and are about to take a big step and become flatmates, as well. It’s hard to say right now whether this is a burgeoning romance between the two of them. However, with the guys spending almost all of their time together, it would be hard to imagine how they put that time to use. And as my girlish romantic mind swirls and turns with all matter of scenarios of the two of them together, the rest of us will just have to wait and see….and join me in my romantic dreams of them. And with this episode today, we’re given a lovely start.
